Day 5: Freakonomics

One of the most presssing questions for a parent is ‘what are you going to name your child?’ The importance of the enquiry has created a huge industry of magazines, books, websites and even experts.

The value of a name encompasses the culture, heritage of a person. It represents the bearer of the name as it is the first thing people will encouter about ones identity. The outcome of a baby with a certain name may alter the way their life plays out. However, many people believe that the outcome of ones’ life is more affected by the community that they grew up in and the culture they are part of.

For example, there is a clear distinction between the uniqueness of names chosen for different ethnicities. This is not only based on their heritage but also the norms of the community that they were brought up in. However, events in history may change the segregation of name choices. A notable example of this is the Black Power Movement in the late 1960’s where names for black babies became more distinct. Previously, in the 1950’s names has overlapped and similar were becoming more common for black and white people. The division of the races caused black babies to have more traditional black names as the movement was based on the value of identity so people where proud to show off their heritage.

A survey was taken and two common names for boys were chosen, for white babies (Jake) and for black babies (Deshawn). Jake would be wealthier, would have access to better education. While Deshawn would most likely experience poverty and would have a lower socioeconomic status. However it is more likely that Jake would be living in a wealthier community than Deshawn which shows that family and community are more influential on ones outcome in life. So a name does not affect destiny.

A study was taken using traditionally African American and white names applying for jobs. It was 33% less likely that the African American name was called back for an interview. This means that if a white man is searching 10 weeks for a job, an equally skilled African American would have to search 15 weeks. Names are also a window in to the socioeconomic background of people.

A name can also make someone more noticeable and famous. An example of this is the use of stage names. Ice Cube has a well known name due to its uniqueness however if he used his real name, O’shea Jackson, there is an argument to be made that he would not attract the same capacity of crowds that he does with his stage name.

Personally, the name I was given has no indication of my heritage. My name is traditionally Italian, however I am Israeli. My parents chose my name after a famous character in a film. I do not feel like it has affected my life however my community and upbringing has without a doubt had a huge affect on my outcome so far.

Overall, it is made clear that a name will not destine the outcomes of a babies life. Parents will not be able to find a name that will ensure that their child will go down one road and not another.
